Frequently Asked Questions
Are There Any Risks with Non-Invasive Stereotactic Radiosurgery?
Because non-invasive stereotactic radiosurgery does not involve pain, anesthesia, or incisions, experiencing risks from these procedures is minimized, compared to other surgical procedures where infection and excessive bleeding are a higher risk. However, despite its non-invasive nature, stereotactic radiosurgery can come with temporary side effects that you may experience. These include:
Fatigue: Feelings of tiredness can occur during your first few weeks after non-invasive stereotactic radiosurgery. During this time, it is important to prioritize rest and not rush back into your normal routines too quickly.
Swelling: As a side effect of your non-invasive stereotactic radiosurgery, swelling in the brain may occur. This can cause other side effects, such as headaches, migraines, nausea, and vomiting. Anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed to you to help manage these side effects.
Scalp issues: Redness, sensitivity, and irritation may appear on your scalp in treated areas. Some patients may experience temporary hair loss in these areas.
It is very rare that patients experience side effects such as brain or neurological problems long after a few weeks post-surgery. However, if you experience any complications at any point during your short recovery period, the team at Princeton Neurological Surgery is prepared to help you get the immediate treatment you’ll need.
How Can I Prepare for Stereotactic Radiosurgery?
The preparation process for non-invasive stereotactic radiosurgery may vary from patient to patient, depending on your condition, needs, and what your surgeon recommends you should do.
However, there are general rules most patients can follow to minimize complications during stereotactic radiosurgery and ensure a successful and safe recovery. These preparatory rules include:
- Avoid drinking and eating anything after midnight on the night before your procedure.
- Consult your primary doctor about stopping medications prior to your procedure, especially if you take medications or injections to control diabetes.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
- Avoid wearing jewelry, eyeglasses, contact lenses, makeup, nail polish, dentures, and wigs to your procedure.
- Inform your surgeon if you are allergic to shellfish or iodine, as these can be chemically related to several dyes that may be used during stereotactic radiosurgery.
- Inform your surgeon if you have implanted medical devices in your body, such as a pacemaker, artificial heart valve, aneurysm clips, neurostimulators, or stents.
- Ask any unanswered questions you may have about your stereotactic radiosurgery.
What Are the Benefits of Non-Invasive Neurosurgery?
By eliminating the need for a surgical procedure, non-invasive neurosurgery provides the benefit of minimized risks and a safer operation. Without the need for incisions and anesthesia, risks such as infection or unexpected reactions to anesthesia are already eliminated. In addition to avoiding risks that surgical procedures come with, non-invasive stereotactic radiosurgery can also lead to:
- Faster procedures
- Safer procedures
- Less recovery time
- Better cosmetic results from smaller, more precise incisions
- Less blood loss
- Reduced risk of muscle damage
- Reduced risk of infection and postoperative pain
- Less rehabilitation required
- Lower reliance on pain medication after surgery
- Minimized side effects
